Stainless steel appliances are by far the most popular appliance finish these days for the kitchen. Many home sellers will buy them just to aid a sale since it’s a feature buyers are looking for.

They’re popular for several reasons which we set out below in the pros section.  However, they’re not with out disadvantages which we set out in the cons section below.

Pros

 Appearance

Stainless steel appliances look sleek and smart. It’s modern look is enhanced with its smooth and fine-textured surface. It comes with a variety of finishes that can easily complement a number of home styles, especially in the kitchen. May it be marble, natural wood or any other stainless steel items, it will surely coordinate effortlessly with them.

Availability on the market

Manufacturers have fully-embraced the use of stainless steels on home appliances making it easier for consumers to find them. Almost all of the home appliance companies include stainless steel items on their available items so buying, or even canvassing for one will never be a problem.

Durability

Stainless steel appliances are known for its long-lasting features. Stainless steel can withstand many years of usage without showings signs of damage. Since it is technically an alloy, it is proven to have greater strength than any other appliances made out of metal.

 Resistance to damage

Stainless steel has a high resistance to stains, rusts and water damage. These factors are important especially when we talk about kitchen appliances which are usually in contact with water and other fluids.

Cons

Cost

The major disadvantage associated with stainless steel appliances is its expensive cost. Among other appliances of different finishes, it is most likely one of the most high-priced.  This is a big deal especially to those who are on a budget.

Fingerprints

Dirts, smudges and fingerprints are some common drawbacks connected with stainless steel appliances. While these smudges can lessen the appeal, it can be easily removed with a stainless steel cleaner. Although the problem is, it will surely go back before you know it.

That said, there are smudge proof stainless steel options these days which is a type I’d recommend.

Cleaning

As we have mentioned earlier, stainless steel items tend to be non-resistant to smudges and dirts unlike any other mediums like metals, woods or marbles. Therefore, keeping it tidy and cleaning it is not an easy task.

Magnetism

Some (not all) stainless steel appliances are non-magnetic. This is only a minor problem to those who like magnetic decorations on their appliances.

Stainless Steel Appliance History

Different types and shapes of stainless steels.

In 1913, a Sheffield metallurgist named Harry Brearley, discovered “rustless” steel while he was doing experiments on different types of steels for weapons. Stainless steel is an alloy of Iron with a minimum of 10.5% Chromium. Chromium produces a thin layer of oxide on the surface, preventing corrosion and giving it high resistance to rust. Stainless steel has become significantly popular on home appliances (especially kitchen appliances) such as refrigerators, microwave ovens and blenders. In fact, most of the kitchen utensils we use are made out of stainless steel for it doesn’t add any taste or flavor to the food.

Things you don’t know about Stainless Steels.

Different types and shapes of stainless steels.

  1. Stainless steel utensils are 100% recyclable. In fact, according to American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), approximately, 88% of the world’s steel is recycled.
  2. Stainless steel can be made into soaps. These may not be able to eliminate germs and bacteria, but it can definitely neutralize strong odors.
  3. Stainless steel clothing exists. Yes, stainless steel can be woven and worn. It has a high resistance to  thermal and radiation resistant, so it is commonly used in the electrical and textiles industries.
  4. Stainless steel repairs itself. When exposed to oxygen and moisture, it produces a thin oxide film, essentially repairing and resisting itself from rust.
  5. Stainless steel can expand or contract, depending on the temperature.
