As we get back from our amazing trip in Paris at Maison et Objet September 2018 and settle back into our interior design studio in Miami, we daydream about the great international brands we discovered. Today we discuss the highlights of our trip to Paris and take you on a quick MO18 intro tour.
The interior design show this year was separated in two parts: “Maison” and “Objet”. The layout below shows you how it was defined. The blue is the “Maison” part. It has larger pieces; furniture mainly. The green is the “Objet” side. These are brands that showcase smaller decorative objects and textiles for example. The actual buildings are all located close to each other, so it is easy to walk from one to the other. They are all connected via covered walkways.
This was our first time at the Maison Objet in Paris. We attended one of the last edition of Maison&Objet Americas in Miami, but we have to say, you can not compare both. We loved that in Maison Objet Paris, there were so many brands we did not know before. The variety of objects and furnishings vendors we discovered is thrilling! We recommend this show to interior design professionals, more than its “cousin” in Miami. You will get more out of it. Plus, you get to tour Paris… what is better than that!?
To fully immerse ourselves in the design and inspiration that was all around us in Paris we stayed one block from the Arc De Triomphe. This area is neighboring the most luxurious residences in all of Paris, in the 16th arrondissement. Our Parisian flat was a convenient 45-minute train ride north from the central heart of Paris to the Parc des Expositions, in Nord Villepoint. We felt like true Parisians, Parisian DKORistas.
Once at Maison et Objet, we recommend you take a look at the floor plan and review your top five areas. Start with these and see what you can still do after that. The show is big and it can get overwhelming if you are not prepared or organized. Take comfortable shoes and a light bag; you will walk A LOT! Don’t forget your camera and business cards. Now you are all set.
We had four days to visit Maison & Objet Paris 2018. Our Miami based interior design team decided to start with the home accessories part, then continue into the textiles. We followed then into the larger items and furniture brands (The “Today” and “Forever” buildings). Our main goal was to find new accessories vendors. Unique items we could not find in the US at our retail stores. We were very pleased with the brands we uncovered.
The “Today” part had more modern & contemporary brands, while the “Forever” building had brands that were considered more timeless. To be honest, there were no brands that were very traditional or conservative in style. The brands all had the European simple and modern flair somehow.
The great benefit of attending this international trade fair is getting to meet manufacturers or direct vendors. Meaning professionals that are close to the manufacturers. You get to learn about the brand’s philosophy and how they came to create (or sell) these products. As interior designers, it is sometimes difficult to establish a direct relationship. Manufacturers and direct vendors typically sell to retailers. More often than once, the manufacturer will give you his reseller contact and that is also fine. But in some case, you can start a unique relationship.
Maison et Objet – Favorite Part
Our favorite part of the show was the “Home Accessories”, the “Today” and the “Forever” buildings. Basically, we loved everything! No, really the home decor fair was amazing and we took a lot back from it. Maison et Objet is now one of our favorite shows in Paris. We are excited to share with our team in Miami the novelties we found. So, stay tuned as we share with you more on MO18… and reveal the design trends we discovered there!
